What are the best dog friendly beaches in Los Angeles?

Aloha Brad!

Paws in the water, tails in the sand… us dogs on the west coast are certainly California dreaming.  But here in Los Angeles, locating a dog-friendly beach is almost like finding a hydrant that hasn’t been marked!  As pet-friendly as our city may be, most LA beaches do not allow dogs, and off-leash beaches are few and far between.

I am happy to share with you my favorite legal dog-friendly beaches, as well as a few “secret spots” that mom and I have discovered over the years!

1) Rosie’s Dog Beach
4800 E Ocean Blvd
Long Beach, CA 90803
*The 1st and only official LA off-leash dog beach… thanks to Justin Rudd & friends for creating & protecting it!

2) Leo Carrillo State Beach
35000 W Pacific Coast Hwy
Malibu, CA 90265
*Dogs are only allowed on-leash… great spot for surfing, camping and picnic’ing!

3) Huntington Dog Beach
100 Goldenwest St
Huntington Beach, CA 92648
*A bit south of LA, but another fun off-leash dog beach that is great for dog/human surfing!

Annnnd… that’s it, you say?!  Well, yes… sadly, we LA dogs have to carefully rebel if we want to spend time on the rest of our sunny beaches.  My family & I live in the Pacific Palisades, and we have found a few secret spots along PCH that are technically “no dogs allowed” where the lifeguards kindly look the other way, so long as you 1) don’t bother anyone 2) stay close to your human 3) have a strong off-leash recall 4) have your human pick up your #2 and 5) don’t go on the weekends in the summer, holidays, or any day that is especially busy!

Please romp at your own risk, and do NOT say that I sent you ;) but you may want to check out my favorite neighborhood Malibu spots: Topanga State Beach (north of the lifeguard tower by the creek) Sunset Beach (just south of Gladstones there is a natural dog play zone protected by big rocks) and along Broad Beach (resident dogs are allowed to play freely, so pretend or get to know someone who owns a house there!)

It’s worth mentioning… if you drive up the coast to Santa Barbara, Arroyo Burro State Beach is one of my favorite off-leash dog beaches.  And if you drive down the coast, there is a reason San Diego is where dog surfing all began!  Coronado, Del Mar, Ocean Beach and many other secret spots all welcome friendly, well-mannered dogs.

Wherever you go, please do your part to ensure dog-friendly beaches remain that way!  Always pick up after your dog, and only allow unleash dogs with a solid recall who are social, confident and trustworthy around children and other dogs.  Be a good role model, and help us dogs earn the respect we deserve, so that more beaches are open to the idea of accepting us :)

If you share my passion for making the world a more dog-friendly place, please sign this petition by Free-Play LA, “a group of dog lovers from Los Angeles County, California, working hard to establish an off-leash  area for dogs and their guardians to enjoy together at Dockweiler State Beach which spans the cities of El Segundo and Playa Del Rey in Los Angeles County.”  Thank you to Georja Umano for letting me know about Free-Play LA!  You can follow their progress on Facebook to learn more about how you can help make a difference for the dogs of Los Angeles.  With summer just around the corner, I hope you and your dogs have the best season of sand, surf and sunshine.

Here is a fun video of my friends Presley, Scout and I on our very first lesson:
